Responsible Sustainable Manufacturing
The Future is Now
One of the core tenets that drives IDI Composites International is a long-term commitment – to our customers, to the composites industry, and to the communities in which we operate. That also includes our commitment to developing more sustainable materials and processes with the aim to reduce our impact on the environment.
Indeed, IDI is committed to becoming a sector leader in reducing carbon emissions through its processes, innovations and the use of bio-sourced and/or recyclable raw materials in its products.
What We Know Today
In 2022, IDI launched a multi-phase global project to develop our sustainability roadmap. The project encompasses our manufacturing facilities in Europe, North America, and China with the aim of establishing the current carbon footprint of our most used materials.
Our cradle-to-gate LCA studies have shown that the carbon footprint of SMC compares favorably to that of steel, aluminum and thermoplastics.
LCA is only part of the story, however. Our commitment is illustrated by the orientation of our factory and our teams in preserving the environment. Many investments have been made for the management of energy, waste and water consumption.
We’re Just Getting Started
Despite the good positioning of SMC/BMC in terms of environmental impact, we continue to innovate in order to further reduce their carbon footprint.
Multiple parallel strategies are required. Some of the most promising include:
Bio-based materials
Work with raw material suppliers, resin producers as well as producers of natural and bio-based additives and reinforcements to qualify new compoundsRecycled materials
Work with generators, aggregators and processors to develop a capable supply of recycled feedstocks for our entire portfolio of productsGreen energy
Powering our factories with green energy.
Smarter Sourcing
IDI is partnering with innovative suppliers to help ensure that our raw material resources come from recycled sources or are bio-based whenever possible verses using only virgin materials. Our material sourcing process helps to ensure that the materials that go into our products, help make our finished materials as environmentally friendly as possible.
Smarter Factories
We undertake studies to ensure that our manufacturing facilities are as earth- friendly as possible in an effort to reduce the carbon footprint in our workplace. Great thought goes into the design and construction of our facilities to minimize their impact on the environment and maximize energy efficiency.
Smarter Manufacturing
It is paramount that our manufacturing processes are as efficient as possible. This is best practice for our customers and best for a healthy planet. Our ongoing system better utilize raw materials, and incorporate energy efficient production all designed to minimize negative impact on the planet.
Smarter Products
The very nature of our innovative composite materials help our customers design and manufacture lighter, stronger and longer lasting products. The greater life expectancy of products helps ensure and safeguard our planet’s natural resources.
